Abhyaas School Of Music
Abhyaas School of Music was established in 2001 by Smt. Aparna Balaji, with a vision to nurture not just musicians, but well-rounded individuals through the rich tradition of Carnatic music. For over 25 years in the Greater Boston area, she has been passionately conducting classes, workshops, and lecture demonstrations, fostering a vibrant and dedicated musical community. Over the course of her 30-year teaching journey across India and the United States, she has mentored more than 450 students, with over 200 students currently enrolled at Abhyaas.
At its core, Abhyaas strives to go beyond technical training. The school emphasizes the holistic development of each student by balancing discipline with creativity and structure with personal expression. Students are guided to internalize not only the finer nuances of Carnatic music but also its deeper, intangible aspects. Equal importance is given to understanding the three foundational pillars of this art form: melody (raga), rhythm (tala), and lyrical expression (sahitya), along with their interconnected roles in musical storytelling.

Abhyaas offers a thoughtfully designed curriculum structured across eight progressive levels, enabling students to grow steadily in both skill and musical awareness. The program is tailored to accommodate diverse learning styles and individual goals, recognizing that each student’s artistic journey is unique.
A distinctive feature of Abhyaas is its strong emphasis on performance and experiential learning. Through initiatives such as the Abhyaas Chamber, students are provided with intimate performance platforms that encourage collaboration, creativity, and confidence. These chamber-style settings allow students to engage deeply with the art form in a supportive and interactive environment.
In addition, the school regularly hosts workshops, lecture demonstrations, and masterclasses led by accomplished artists, offering students exposure to diverse perspectives within Carnatic music. Abhyaas has also organized numerous cultural events and performing arts confluences, often collaborating with other institutions to strengthen community engagement and appreciation for Indian classical arts.
Understanding that one size does not fit all, Abhyaas places strong emphasis on personalized mentorship. Performance opportunities are thoughtfully curated to suit each student’s comfort level and aspirations, allowing them to explore, experiment, and evolve at their own pace. Hosting music and dance confluences has been a recent addition, further enriching the learning experience and broadening artistic exposure. With a commitment to both tradition and innovation, Abhyaas School of Music continues to serve as a nurturing space where music becomes a lifelong companion, and where students develop not only as artists but also as thoughtful and expressive individuals.
